@Markus I get your drift on where you were going there. I often think of my past and use it as a means to analyze where I am and where I want to get to. Where I struggel is balancing it all out. How do you guys balance things out?

Yes link building is key to driving traffic however it is more difficult to obtain quality links that it first may seem.

Be prepared to spend many months if not years building links before you see significant results

Agreed with you there. Link building advertises your site and drives great organic traffic, if you're getting your links in contextually appropriate places. And, it also build's your site's relevance in the eyes of the search engines, so you can rank higher in organic searches. I'd also add that the act of commenting on blogs to build your links also draws the eyes of the person who's running the blog. If they like your stuff, those bloggers may decide to link to your posts, which costs you exactly zero dollars!
