Article directories are great but lets not forget about niche article directories. I am a little biased admittedly (run a shopping article directory known as ezineshopper), however whenever I am building links to say a finance website I will get links from all the top sites like goarticles, ezinearticles etc but I will also put the time into finding a long list of niche article directories in the finance sector as these will provide more relevant links.

However you must make your article quality as there are a lot of people that have abused the system and made poor articles. Fortunately the article directories have started to clamp down on it so your article had better be good to get approved.
